Lvov



















Lvov - a city in  western part of  Ukraine with population about  735 thousand people (2007). The city is located on river Poltva, on distance about 80 km from border with Poland. The administrative centre of Lvovskaya area.The first written mentionings pertain to 1256. City was founded by  king Danila Galitskiy, is named in honour of his son  Lev Daniilovich.

The historycal  centre of city is contributed in list of the worldwide heritage UNESCO.Lvov occupies the first place in Ukraine on amount of historical-architectral monuments. In architecture of Lvov, which had only little damage during wars in XXs, are reflected many european styles and directions, corresponding to different history epoch. After fire 1527 and 1556 there practically did not remain the trace of gothic Lvov,  but then are well represented following epoches of the renaissance, baroque.

Lvov remains an important cultural centre at soviet time . At the end of 70ies here works five theatres, philharmonic, also 40 movie-theatres, circus, 46 Palaces of the culture, 12 large museums, more than 350 libraries.Lvov is one of the the most most important centres of education  in Ukraine.

Here are three large universities and ensemble of small universities. In Lvov are located 8 institutes of  National Academy of the sciences of  Ukraine.
