The former soviet republic of Ukraine is fast becoming a popular destination for higher education in medicine, owing to its efforts to open up to the international community. Here's a chance to gain a recognised qualification in Europe's 'emerging nation.'
Lugansk State Medical University was established in 1956. It is one of the oldest medical higher institutes of learning in Ukraine.
Graduates from this university are well placed in science and practical health services. Among them are scientists, heads of public health service, and honored doctors.
Lugansk State Medical University is attested according to the highest (the fourth) Level of accreditation. The University boasts of 172 medical specialities. Good infrastructure and highly qualified faculty make it one of the most sought after Universities in Europe.
The strong 400 teaching community including 63 doctors of sciences and 273 candidates of sciences, help in carrying out pedagogical, scientific, medical and educational work in 48 departments.
The University is recognised by the World Health Organisation and is listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools. With this, the university gains recognition with GMC UK and indeed with most medical recognition authorities around the world. The University offers the EU (European Union) syllabus, which is invariably recognised by all EU member states. Graduates can also directly practice in Gulf countries without additional screening tests.
The University offers Post Graduate — MD courses in English in Radiology, Internal Medicine, General Medicine, Cardiology, General surgery, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Orthopedics, and Neurology. The duration of the MD programme is two years. In addition, three-year Phd research courses are also available in various disciplines
Faculty of medicine
Medical course at the Lugansk State Medical University takes six years and leads to MD (Doctor of Medicine) or MBBS degree. In the six-year undergraduate programme, students learn different subjects from fundamental subjects disciplines to special medical subjects.
The university is popular for its innovative teaching, clinical training and research programmes. Its award-winning faculty members constantly strive for excellence in the classroom, the laboratory and the clinic. Admission to the medical faculty takes place after finalising a contract. Foreigners learn in a group of seven or eight, along with local students. Students attend their clinical studies in the second year, where they gain experience in nursing the patients. Clinical subjects are taught from the beginning of the third year. Students can study any topic of interest to enhance their knowledge in the discipline.
The medium of instruction in the medical faculty is English and Russian.
The state final examinations on all the disciplines according to the syllabus are held under one system, but in two stages.
The first stage involves testing the practical proficiency of final-year students (when exams on clinical disciplines are taken, testing takes place at the patient's bed). The second stage tests their scientific/theoretical proficiency.
There are a wide range of specialisations available in the public and private sectors, involving research, academic medicine, public health, clinical medicine and other areas. Specialties include Cardiology, Oncology, Paediatrics, Psychological Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Public Health, General Practice and many others. Most doctors complete postgraduate training in their chosen specialty.
